Lexus . question for a mechanic about shocks/suspension, any help/insight is appreciated? question for a mechanic about shocks/suspension, any help/insight is appreciated? hi please only serious experienced answers if possible, this is very serious to me. anyway, i drive a 2000 chevy impala ls. over the last few months a strange, almost *knocking on wood* type sound has been coming from the driver side rear suspension/shock. this hasn't really been an issue at all in the vehicles drive-ability however in the recent weeks the sort of *knocking* sound has become louder and more pronounced with every bump on the road, its even getting to a point that its making an ever so slight *knocking* sounds even if i go over a small rock or stone. now, i'm not the most tech-savy person and i'm also not the richest, the problem isn't that i can't just go to a mechanic or shop and ask for a repair, it's that i can't go in and have them up-sell me like its happened in the past. (this one time a dealer told me my breaks were totally worn down when just the other month i had them all replaced at another shop so it wouldn't have been on GM's "record" of work and when i asked to see the rotors the mechanic brought me a drum brake that would have probably gone on a truck, luckily for me i know a little something about cars, but my expertise ends at common knowledge) i'm afraid of what this damage could be and i don't want to put my family in any sort of danger by continuing to drive unfortunately it is our only mode of transportation and way to and from work, at the same time however my family cannot afford any unnecessary financial burdons, if it must be fixed than i will, but only what must be fixed. im going to link a few photo's if it at all helps in determining the exact cause. my hope is that i can go to a number of dealers with a defense ready for if and when they may attempt to offer to fix more than i really need. once again any help is greatly appreciated. thank you Daniel http://www.flickr.com/photos/62295337@N06/5665769596/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/62295337@N06/5665769404/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/62295337@N06/5665769074/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/62295337@N06/5665201629/in/photostream thanks again. car insurance. Lexus . How to Change the Starter in a Mini CooperWithout the starter in your Mini Cooper, the car would just sit there. When you turn on the key, it sends an electrical impulse to the solenoid, which activates the starter. The starter then engages the flywheel to start the car. If you hear a rapid clicking sound when you turn the key, or it simply does nothing, you likely need to change the starter. Experienced home mechanics should be able to complete the job in about two hours. You can do it in your driveway or garage. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Wrench set Masking tape Marker Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the terminal nut. 2 Disconnect the exhaust system from the manifold by removing the nuts using a wrench. Remove the eight nuts holding the exhaust manifold to the engine using a wrench. 3 Remove the heat shield covering the starter, using a wrench to remove the nuts. Release the oxygen sensor from the wire clip. 4 Disconnect the wires to the alternator, using a wrench to remove the nuts. 5 Tag the electrical wires on the starter, noting their proper locations with the marker and masking tape. Disconnect the wires using a wrench to remove the nuts. Remove the starter mounting bolts using a socket and ratchet. 6 Install the new starter on the engine and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Connect the electrical wires to the starter according to the tags, then tighten the nuts with the wrench. 7 Connect the electrical wires to the alternator and tighten the nuts with the wrench. Hook the oxygen sensor back into the wire clip. Replace the heat shield on the starter and tighten the nuts with the wrench. 8 Attach the exhaust manifold to the engine and tighten the eight nuts with the wrench. Connect the exhaust system to the manifold and tighten the nuts with the wrench. 9 Connect the battery cable and tighten the terminal nut with a wrench. Start the car to test the new starter. Tips & Warnings Do not attempt this procedure without disconnecting the battery as instructed. Failure to do so might result in electrical shock.
Lexus . How to Troubleshoot Starting Problems for a 1999 Dodge AvengerThe Dodge Avenger, like many Chrysler products of the past forty years, has not proven to be the most reliable automobile on the road. Add in the age of a 1999 Dodge Avenger, and there could be a number of issues preventing it from starting. The most common cause is the battery, which is easily addressed. A mechanical problem, however, requires the attention of a professional mechanic or a dealership. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Car battery Jumper cables Flathead screwdriverTroubleshoot Starting Problems Step by Step : 1 Attempt to start the Avenger. Listen for the engine to turn over, which will sound like chugging. If there is no chugging, look at the dashboard lights. If the lights do not turn on, or, if they are only flickering, then the battery is dead or dying. 2 Take the keys out of the ignition, and pop open the hood. Prop the hood with the rod on the side of the engine bay. Inspect the battery for foam. If there is foam present, the battery is leaking acid, and a tow truck is needed. A professional mechanic has to deal with the battery, due to the danger of acid burns. If there is no foam, strike the battery post clamps with a shoe, as the clamps may need to reconnect. Try starting the Dodge. If it does not start, the battery needs to be replaced, or it needs a jump. 3 Jumpstarting a Dodge Avenger is no different than with any other car. Make sure the Dodge is off, by taking the keys out of the ignition. Park a functioning car hood to hood with the Dodge. Open both hoods. Connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive terminal on the Dodge and the other end to the positive terminal on the other car. Connect one end of the black cable to the negative terminal on the other car and the other end to a bare metal part of the Dodge. Start the functioning car, and let it idle for five minutes, and start the Avenger. Let the Avenger run for half an hour, to fully recharge the battery, or you can quickly burn out the alternator, by driving and charging. If, however, this does not work, your battery may be beyond revival and need to be replaced. 4 Replacing the battery in a Dodge Avenger is the same as with any other car. Turn off the car. Remove the battery post clamps, by unscrewing the O-ring clamps with a flathead screwdriver, and remove the retaining clamps with the flathead screwdriver. Pull the battery out by the handle, and slide in the new battery. Screw down the retaining claps and electrical clamps, being careful to not over-tighten the screws. Try to turn the Avenger. If the car lights come on, but the engine does not start, the engine may be flooded. 5 Clearing a flooded engine is the easiest part of fixing a non-starting Avenger, as the car has a "Clear Flood" mode that will clear a flooded engine. A flooded engine is when there is fuel on the spark plugs, which is stopping them from sparking. To enable the Clear Flood mode, you need to depress the accelerator, all the way to the floor, before repeatedly turning the ignition to the "On" position. This triggers the Clear Flood mode, which makes the engine pump air instead of fuel, thus drying the spark plugs. Do this for five minutes, and take your foot off the pedal, and turn the car off, taking the keys out of the ignition. After a minute, the car should start. If not, there may be mechanical problems necessitating a professional mechanic with diagnostic equipment to fix it. *Part V: Helping Your Car Look Its Best Even if you have a car with a fiberglass (and therefore rustproof) body, the underbody is metal and, therefore, still the most sensitive area where rust is concerned. I have ridden in venerable old cars where the floorboards had rusted through so completely that you could see the road flash by under neath. And if rust attacks the frame, the car can be on its way to the Great Car Lot in the Sky before you know it. Dealing vOith any rust you find Okay, the worst has happened: You've found some rust spots on your car. Don't panic: You still have time to save the patient — unless the rust has gone too far. If the rust is underneath the car, on the underside of the body or bumpers where it doesn't show, or still confined to very small areas that can be touched up easily, you can probably take care of the matter yourself. Here's what to do: 1. Gently scrape away the rust with a single-edged razor blade or fine sandpaper. 1071

Use coarse sandpaper to grind the rust off large areas that are out of sight and not surrounded by paint. Always work inward from the edges to avoid extending the area by damaging the paint. Don't make a large job out of a small one by carelessly damaging the surrounding paint! Rust remover can make this job easier if you apply it after you get the crusty stuff off the surface. 2. After you've removed all the rust, apply some rust arrester to keep the rust from spreading further. Rust, like fire, is a form of oxidation. Products like Meta-Prep and Extend change the chemical nature of the rust and prevent it from further oxidizing the metal. You just brush or spray on most rust arrestors, wait for them to turn from white to black, and then wash them off thoroughly. (Be sure to follow the directions on the package.) 3. As soon as the area is dry, prime and paint it to protect the surface and restore it to its former beauty. See the upcoming "Priming and Painting" section for details. If you see large rust holes in the body of the vehicle, or if the frame has been badly weakened, get a couple of estimates from reliable body shops on what repairing the damage would cost. Then check those estimates against what your vehicle is worth by calling your local bank, insurance company, or loan Lexus . Why does the car shake when you make a turn?

If you're considering having your vehicle undercoated (or doing it yourself), consider these points: If rust is already present on the underbody, undercoating simply locks the rust away, where it continues its insidious work unseen. So before you have your car undercoated, make sure that it's absolutely rust-free. If it isn't, have all the rust removed and a rust arrestor used to destroy any rust that may have been overlooked, and then have the undercoating applied. If your vehicle is fairly new and hasn't begun to rust, having it under-coated still may be a good idea, especially if you live in a snowy area. Make sure that they treat the underside of the car with a rust arrestor first, just to be sure, and that the undercoating won't void any warranties. Many new vehicles come with undercoating as part of the package; this option is fine and worth bargaining for. If undercoating is an "optional extra," you may find it cheaper to have the work done by an independent professional undercoating shop. Get an estimate of costs before you deal for the car so that you know where the best deals are, and make sure that the outside work won't void any warranties. Spray undercoatings designed for amateur use are probably better than nothing, but continue to watch closely for rust after applying them. If you decide to try one of these spray undercoatings, work in a well-ventilated area. Don't spray the undercoating (or anything else, for that matter) on any cables, pipes, or parts under the car that get hot; otherwise, they'll smell awful when the heat hits the undercoating. And before you use the stuff, remove every bit of rust and coat the surfaces with rust arrestor. Removing. By taking care of all these things at once, you can then put the final coats on all of them at the same time and have a car that looks wonderful. c* If the metal has been pushed in and hasn't been badly creased, you can try to pop the metal back into place with a rubber plunger (the kind they call a plumber's helper). Just moisten the edge of the rubber, place the plunger over the dent, establish suction by pressing down on the handle, and then pull it toward you. It may take a couple of tries before the metal pops back to normal. This technique works especially well on large expanses of metal, such as doors and fenders, if they have only been bent inward. u0 If you have small dents, you can attempt to hammer them out by placing a flat piece of metal (with a rag wrapped around it to protect the paint from scratching) on the outer side of the car and banging the dent from the underside with a flat-ended hammer. Be very careful to bang the underside of the dent only, and not the surrounding area, or you'll end up with a couple of new bumps to deal with. Work from the shallow sides of the dent toward the deeper areas and avoid overworking the metal, which stretches it. v* If you have very small dings or places where the paint has chipped, you can fill them in with glazing putty, which is very easy to handle.
